Curatorial Statement:
One of the defining aspects of photography in the 20th & 21st centuries has been its ability to hold a moment still for the consideration of an individual or in the case of some seminal images a civilization.
Our media life has evolved into a 24 hour stream of information available at every minute at every venue from tv to computer to phone.
Forgotten in this maze of information is photography’s ability to consider something for more than a fraction of a second. The 19th century photographs made by photographers working in the American West showed rivers as silken ribbons because of the lengthy exposures needed with the materials available at that time. Only the still photograph is capable of seeing the world in that manner.
The American photographer, Wynn Bullock, was fascinated by the role time played in the making of the image. He would often make incremental exposures on a single sheet of film creating a composite of moments in a single image. Duane Michals engaged us with elaborate narrative sequences that probed what makes us human. David Hockney’s “joiner photographs” offer the multiplicity of a cubist point of view that is anything but still.
All of these approaches and others not mentioned extend the moment the viewer is proffered to view. It is a vision unique to the medium of photography and on that this exhibit will celebrate.
